Violation Contexts and Deontic Independence

چکیده

In this paper we discuss the role of context and independence in normative reasoning. First, deontic operators { obligations, prohibitions , permissions { referring to the ideal context may connict with operators referring to a violation (or contrary-to-duty) context. Second, deontic independence is a powerful concept to derive deontic operators from such operators of other violation contexts. These two concepts are used to determine how to proceed once a norm has been violated, a key issue of deontic logic applications in computer science. We also show how violation contexts and deontic independence can be used to give a new analysis of several notorious paradoxes of deontic logic.

Contextual Deontic Logic Violation Contexts and Factual Defeasibility

In this article we introduce Contextual Deontic Logic (Cdl) to analyze the relation between deontic, contextual and defeasible reasoning. The optimal state, and therefore the set of active obligations, can change radically when the violation context changes. In such cases we say that the obligations only in force in the previous violation context are defeated; contextual deontic logic is theref...

The Possibility of Norm-Violation in Deontic Logics for Action Types An Analysis of Bentzen’s Action Type Deontic Logic and a New Semantics

In a recent paper, Bentzen proposes a semantically characterised logic called Action Type Deontic Logic, where normative concepts are applied to action expressions, rather than propositional statements. The logic offers solutions to many of the paradoxes of deontic logic. In particular, Bentzen’s semantics solves many puzzles involving the interaction of permission with conjunction and disjunct...

A Deontic Logic For Diagnosis Of Organisational Process Design

There are already approaches that show how deontic logic can be used in a theory of diagnosis based on minimal sets. In those approaches deontic notions are represented by a propositional language enriched with violation constants. However, diagnoses based on minimal sets are insufficient to capture the specificities of process design diagnosis. In organisational process design it is important ...

The effects of the violation of local independence assumption on the person measures under the Rasch model

Local independence of test items is an assumption in all Item Response Theory (IRT) models. That is, the items in a test should not be related to each other. Sharing a common passage, which is prevalent in reading comprehension tests, cloze tests and C-Tests, can be a potential source of local item dependence (LID). It is argued in the literature that LID results in biased parameter estimation ...

Free Choice in Deontic Inquisitive Semantics (DIS)

We will propose a novel solution to the free choice puzzle that is driven by empirical data from legal discourse and does not suffer from the same problems as implicature-based accounts. We will argue against implicature-based accounts and provide an entailment-based solution. Following Anderson’s violation-based deontic logic, we will demonstrate that a support-based radical inquisitive semant...
